Casio BE-300

Casio BE-300 w/Top Menu I bought this wonderful little “pocket manager” handheld for $150 a few months ago from Bestbuy.com; recently I went into an actual store, and they said they no longer carry them. Might still be online, though, or on ebay... For the price, it’s great!  Compact flash cards make it limitless memory-wise..... Below is a collection of links and such as I come across them.... Out of the box, it’s disappointing - a glorified address book.  With expod instead of Top Menu, though, as an interface (free from expod.net), it’s one powerful little alternative to the pricey pocketpc’s.

Casio BE-300 - Official Casio site. Prices for accessories appear to have recently dropped considerably, but you might want to check the more expensive ones on ebay just to be sure. :)

Forums:

Expod.net - Home of the wonderful interface that is expod.  Don’t BE without it!  hehe
BE-Central - Very active forum for the BE. Great place for help, downloads, etc.

Programs I have tried and LIKE:

Expod - an overlay/os type program that makes life with a BE much more friendly!
Pocket Friendly Backgammon - www.anywerx.com

Ebooks:

Mobipocket - A free ebook reader program.  Works on a LOT of different handhelds. Try buying the $10 module that will let you print from MS Word to mobipocket format (.prc).  You can also download news and such through their mobipocket program, but I’m in a rural area and haven’t tried it.

Fictionwise.com - a neat source for ebooks. They just set up a lending library for their paid club members.

Olive Tree - Free bible reader, many versions free, some you have to buy. Handy when the lights go out at the KH, as I discovered last Sunday.  :)

There are LOTS of apps. Although the BE is running an off-version of Windows CE for the “pocket manager” and NOT the pocketpc OS, there are alot of smart people getting apps out for it.  I have an Acrobat Reader, an mp3 player, database & spreadsheet programs, pocket streets (older version), and I’m still discovering more. I got them through the forums.

Things that DON’T Work with the BE:

Navman GPS Sleeve (I actually contacted Navman and got email from someone who tried the sleeves on the BE)

Microsoft Secure PocketPC Reader (the new version for the Pocketpc, which is the one that sites like Barnes and Noble and Amazon sell secure ebooks for). There IS someone who has come up with a crack to convert .lit books into an html format that other readers can use, but it doesn’t always work on the secure books. Bombard MS with requests for a cross-platform reader! hehe

Handmark Software - Although they say their software is for the WinCE platform, most of it, if not all of it, does NOT work with the BE. I asked. (2/15/03)
